DELANO - With a snip of the scissors, a new 45 acre Walmart Supercenter opened in Delano Wednesday.
The store opening means a lot of Delano residents will no longer have to travel to Bakersfield to do their shopping.
"We have people who cannot drive to Bakersfield,” said Grace Vallejo, Delano City Council member. “They try to get rides and they try to even go on the bus to go and shop in Bakersfield. This is going to keep the people here, our taxes here, and our growth is going to be unbelievable."
It takes about 300 full-time and part-time employees to run this Walmart Supercenter. Most of those employees will come from Delano.
But, not everyone is happy about the store opening. Ileana An runs a dress shop in Delano and wonders how she can compete with the retail giant
"Not impossible, but difficult,” An recently told 17 News. “Very difficult because of prices."
Most of the people we spoke with Wednesday are happy the supercenter is finally here.
"Oh man, I have been waiting for this to happen for a long time,” said Delano resident Daniel Barnes. “I am glad the city of Delano is upgrading and we should have had a Walmart years ago."
The new Walmart is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is still hiring for part-time and full-time positions.
