Jefferson Elementary School students present check for Hurricane Harvey relief

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Students at Jefferson Elementary School in Bakersfield heard about what Hurricane Harvey did to Texas, and kids just like them, so they spent the last week collecting change from home.

Today, they presented a check for $1,146.85 to the American Red Cross, to help with hurricane relief efforts in the Lone Star State.

"Obviously it's great to be a part of the solution, of the help for a need. From the standpoint of being a teacher, it's just so powerful to have the children have an opportunity to share in any way they can," 2nd grade teacher Betty Reeves said.

Hurricane Harvey left tens of thousands of people homeless -- many of them children.
