Bakersfield, California - Chief Meteorologist Alissa Carlson has crossed the country covering all types of weather. She's forecasted weather for Kern County's Valley, Mountains, and Deserts since 2007. Growing up in Illinois, Alissa spent most of her life watching severe thunderstorms and measuring snow with her dad who loves weather. Meanwhile, Alissa's mom was a reporter so news is in her blood! After graduating Salutatorian in high school, Alissa went on to earn a Bachelor's of Science degree at Illinois State University followed by a Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology at Mississippi State University. She holds the Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association and is a member of the American Meteorological Society.
In 2010, Alissa won the Mark Twain Award from the Associated Press for Best Weathercast. She also won Best Weathercast in Bakersfield in 2009 & 2011 from the Kern Press Club. Most recently in 2015, Alissa's weather was part of the Emmy Award Winning KGET news at 5pm newscast. Other career highlights include covering snowstorms, tornadoes, and historic Mississippi River Floods while in the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities. While in Greenville, North Carolina, Alissa worked through the active hurricane season of 2004. She went on to cover the record-breaking hurricane season of 2005 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Alissa is very involved in the community, taking an active role in numerous charity events as an emcee. She has helped raise money and donations for organizations such as the SPCA, Gleaners, Volunteer Center, and the Bakersfield Homeless Center, to name a few. the In February 2008, Alissa was chosen for the cover of Bakersfield Magazine. She was selected as a Lady in Red by the American Heart Association, as part of its "Go Red For Women" campaign. Alissa was a lector at St. Phillip's Catholic Church for 5 years. She was honored to be a part of California State University-Bakersfield's commencement ceremonies in 2014 and 2015. She married Bankruptcy Attorney Neil Schwartz in 2015. Their wedding was featured in Bakersfield Magazine.
