From Green Right Now Reports

austinwater_logo_1Austin Water is serious about rain barrels and catchment systems — so much so that the utility’s customers could qualify for hundreds, even thousands in rebates by looking to Mother Nature for their irrigation needs.

When it Rains It Stores...TreeHouse in Austin

TreeHouse in Austin promotes its rainwater harvesting system: “When It Rains It Stores.”

Rebates cannot exceed 50 percent of the project cost and participation is limited to once every 12 months, until the maximum lifetime rebate amount ($5,000) is reached.

So if you’ve been dreaming about a rainwater harvesting system for home or garden, now may be the time to take the plunge.

Find out more at Austin Water’s Rainwater Harvesting webpage , where there’s also find a link to the rebate application.

The utility also has posted an FAQ on rainwater harvesting, which answers questions about how to qualify and apply. People planning large systems over 500 gallons need to submit their plans ahead of time to be assured of a rebate. If you’re installing a system that collects under 500 gallons, you can submit your receipt after the fact, but within 30 days.

Here are a few examples of how the rebates work.

  • 100 gallons, non-pressurized, $200 cost = $50 rebate
  • 100 gallons, non-pressurized, $50 cost = $25 rebate
  • 1000 gallons, non-pressurized, $1500 cost = $500 rebate
  • 1000 gallons, pressurized, $1500 cost = $750 rebate
  • 1000 gallons, pressurized, $2500 cost = $1,000 rebate
  • 10,000 gallons, pressurized, $20,000 cost = $5,000 rebate

Many types of rain barrels will qualify, but not second-hand or self-made, according to Austin Water.
