Bakersfield Fire Department urges readiness in case of natural disaster

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - As Hurricane Harvey is set to pound the Texas coastline, the Bakersfield Fire Department is reminding residents to be ready for a potential natural disaster striking the Central Valley.

Fire officials advise residents should be prepared to be self-sufficient for up to three days. The fire department urges individuals, families and businesses to prepare, including building preparedness kit.

The Bakersfield Fire Department says preparedness kits should include the following items:

  • water and purifier
  • food and camp stove
  • flashlights, phones, radios and batteries
  • tent, blankets and sleeping bag
  • first aid kit
  • fire extinguisher
  • medications, pet food and other special needs
  • documents and cash
  • tools, utensils and matches
  • clothing and shoes
