The California Highway Patrol says a high speed chase ended in tragedy Friday night after a fleeing SUV hit a parked trailer ejecting and killing the 26-year-old passenger.
It all happened on Oswell Street near Edison Highway around 10:00 p.m.
"I was taking my grandson home," said Donald Hull.
It was supposed to be a quick trip for Hull but it turned into a nightmare.
"I was driving up Oswell over the overpass and all of the sudden I saw lights in the rear view mirror and the car was speeding up on me," said Hull.
Hull said the driver tried to pass him on the right but instead hit this parked truck trailer.
"Oh it was terrible," said Hull. "It was right there basically next to me when they hit and all I could see was the lights and the smashing."
The SUV then flew into Hull's car, scatching up the left side and terrifying his 3-year-old grandson who was in the back seat.
"I pulled over to the side and got him out of the car because he was scared traumatized but he was okay," said Hull.
It wasn't until then that Hull realized the crash was the end of a chase.
"I just thought it was some crazy driver and then as soon as it hit me I heard the sirens that were chasing him," said Hull.
The Kern County Sheriff Department said the pursuit started at the intersection of Brundage Lane and Oswell Street.
The Kern County Sheriff's Department said initially the 1995 Chevy Blazer stopped for a traffic violation but when the deputy approached the driver's side window the driver sped away. After a short pursuit, the Sheriff's Department said the SUV crashed into the trailer.
"Just like a big old boom, a car wreck," said Marisol Ibanes, who was outside here home at the time of the crash, standing 100 feet away from the impact. Her uncle owns the trailer the driver hit.
California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, identifying the driver as 37-year-old Frederico Anguiano Sanchez.
"You can't be safe," said Hull. "You can't take it for granted you're going to be safe on anywhere I mean I was two block away from my house."
The passenger has been identified as Guillermina Puentes. We're told the driver is at Kern Medical Center with moderate injuries. There's no word yet if he will face any criminal charges.
