Centennial High School wins ‘We the People' regional champions

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Centennial High School's 'We The People' was crowned regional champions over the weekend.

On Saturday, nearly 200 local high school students competed in the annual 'We The People' congressional hearings competition at Golden Valley High School. In the end, it was Centennial High School that took home the victory in the regional competition, according to Kern County Superintendent of Schools.

During the competition, students use their knowledge of civics, history and law to present a four-minute testimony before a panel comprised of civic leaders and community scholars. Each school presents testimony in two rounds of six "units" or mock congressional hearings.

After the testimony, the teams answer questions posed by the panel involving constitutional issues raised by events in history. The combined totals of all six units determines the winner.

The regional competition consisted of eight Kern County high school teams competing for a chance to win either the 21st or 23rd Congressional District title, depending on the district in which they were seeded. Arvin High School won the 21st Congressional District trophy and Centennial was victorious in the 23rd District. Centennial emerged as the overall region champion in very close scoring, according to the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.

Centennial will go on to represent Kern County in the state championships to be held Feb. 2 & 3 in Bakersfield. The team is coached by Joseph Biron.
