Environmental Tips - Part Two

Did you Know?
Most experts say there’s no need to worry that your clothes won’t be as clean if the water isn’t as hot. The reduction in temperature will usually do a similar job of cleaning unless clothes are really soiled.

Lower Temp Washing

Heating the water to wash your clothes is responsible for most of the energy used when operating a clothes washer. Using warm water instead of hot can reduce energy use by half and using cold water can reduce energy even more.

Refrigerator Seals

Make sure the seals on your refrigerator doors seal tightly. If they don’t you can lose energy as your cooler has to work harder to keep your food cold.

A simple test to see if your seals need to be replaced is to place a piece of paper where the door meets the refrigerator and close the door. If you can easily pull the paper out while the door is closed, it’s time to replace the seals.

Refrigerator Temperature

What is the proper temperature setting for my refrigerator and freezer?

Keeping the cooler between 38 and 40 degrees and the freezer between 0 and 5 is ideal.

Lower Your Thermostat

How can you save 3 percent on your heating costs?

In the winter, set your thermostat to the lowest temperature that you and your family find comfortable. Try setting it no higher than 68 degrees. In the summer, set it no lower than 78 degrees.

Try reducing or raising your thermostat one degree at a time for a week. With each one-degree adjustment for an eight-hour period your energy costs will be reduced.

Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to program a specific schedule of when they want their heating or cooling to come on or turn off. Energy is reduced because the home is heated or cooled only when it needs to be.

Programmable thermostats can reduce a homeowner’s utility bill by about five percent or up to $200 a year.
