Bakersfield lawyer disbarred after embezzlement claims from former client

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Bakersfield lawyer has been disbarred after failing to show in court for accusations of embezzling money from a client.

Court documents say Heather J. Stanley received checks from a client in 2010 and 2011 totaling more than $1 million.

That money was supposed to be held in trust, but investigators said Stanley took most of it herself in 2013.

The California State Bar said Stanley failed to respond to a motion to have her license revoked last year.

The bar official disbarred her last week and has been ordered to pay the money back.
