Bakersfield man accused in deadly DUI crash in Kings County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Bakersfield man is suspected of driving under the influence and causing a deadly crash Friday night in Kings County. Danny Garcia, 81, is accused of causing two collisions and leaving the scenes.

California Highway Patrol received multiple reports just after 9 p.m. Friday of a reckless driver in San Luis Obispo County, in the area of Highway 101 and State Route 46. A CHP officer attempted to stop the 2016 Dodge Ram, allegedly driven by Garcia, but he took off. 

During the pursuit, Garcia reportedly hit a 2004 Lincoln driven by Matthew Penner, 44, of Fresno. Penner was not injured. 

Garcia was also involved in a second traffic collision in Kings County at the intersection of State Route 41 and the off-ramp of southbound Interstate 5. The 29-year-old driver of a 2003 Toyota Camry died at the scene. CHP reports he was from Avenal. The King's County Coroner has not yet released his identity.

According to CHP, Garcia ran from the scene of the deadly crash. A CHP helicopter located Garcia in tall grass in a field nearby 

Garcia was booked on felony charges including vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence, evading arrest and hit and run.
