Celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Bakersfield

St. Patrick's Day in Bakersfield - Get your green out and enjoy a cold, emerald beverage; St. Patrick's Day is here.

People are drinking green beverages, eating St. Patrick's Day staples like corned beef, potatoes and cabbage, but, like most holidays, it's not you're doing that makes it fun, it's who you're doing it with.

Customers fill McMurphy's Irish Pub as the green beverages flow and the food is meticulously prepared. McMurphy's is serving all the Irish favorites, like corned beef, potatoes and cabbage, as well as cooking up some barbeque on the outdoor patio. The food and drinks are nice, but enjoying them with friends is important to some customers.

"It's a celebration with friends," Cheri Ancheta says. "Everybody is happy right now. Everybody's happy. We're here to have a good time."

But some people's pleasures are more simple on this Irish holiday.

"Oh the drinking," Chervelle Stewart, "Oh and the green. The green, the green's good too."

Over in Northwest Bakersfield, Shamrock's Irish Pub is doling out their own green beer, Guinness and a beverage they call an Irish trashcan. Dan Mckenzie owns the bar, is part Irish himself, and enjoys the holiday like everyone else.

"And today especially it's on a Friday," Mckenzie said. "So that's extra special."

While he knows people are out having a good time, Mckenzie also wants people to be safe.

"Behave yourself," Mckenzie said. "Don't get too carried away. And, you know, get home safe and hopefully everybody has a smile on their face at the end of the day."
