Charges filed in Azteca Market Shooting

LAMONT, Calif. - UPDATE: Elias Aguilar has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and an additional charge of that assault being with a gun. 

On March 27, at about 11:24 am, deputies with the Kern County Sheriff's Office Metropolitan Patrol Section responded to a report of a shooting at the Azteca Market at 2801 Weedpatch Hwy., north of Lamont.

When deputies arrived they determined a suspect had entered the store and became involved in a confrontation with a store owner named Elias Aguilar. Sheriff's deputies say the store owner then shot the suspect.

The suspect was able to flee the area in a vehicle after he was shot, and was located a short time later in the area of Morning Drive and Breckenridge Road. The suspect had sustained major injuries and was transported to Kern Medical for treatment. He is currently in critical condition.

Detectives responded and have initiated an investigation into the shooting. The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has information on this case they are asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 861-3110 or Secret Witness at 322-4040.
