Felony charges recommended for Giumarra in fatal January crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif - Bakersfield police are recommending the District Attorney's office to file felony DUI charges against John Giumarra III, accused of a fatal hit-and-run crash in January.

Supervising Deputy District Attorney Michael Yraceburn says he received the report Thursday morning.

Giumarra, 48, was arrested following the crash January 16, but bailed out of jail.

The report recommends charges of felony DUI causing injury, hit and run causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 or greater.

Police say Giumarra took off after he struck a woman on Golden State Highway near F Street.  The bicyclist Angela Holder, 32, had been hospitalized since the crash but died January 18.

It's up to the District Attorney's office to decide what charges, if any, are filed in this case.
