Highway Fire grows to more than 1,500 acres, 10% contained

The so-called Highway Fire burning off Highway 178 in the Kern River Canyon has grown to 1,541 acres and remains at 10 percent containment, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
 
The fire started around 2:20 p.m. Sunday, just off the highway on Borel Road, near Kern Canyon Road.
 
Evacuations remain in effect in North and South Black Gulch.
 
The Kern County Fire Department said there have been no reported injuries, and no structures are threatened.
 
Highway 178 between China Garden and Borel Road remains closed. The California Highway Patrol said drivers can still travel between Bakersfield and Lake Isabella using the lower canyon and Old Kern Canyon Road.
