Honoring loved ones together this holiday season

Hoffmann Hospice's 25th annual "Light Up A Life" event

Bakersfield, Calif. - With Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas less than one month away, the holiday season is in full swing. But it can be a sad time for people, who are grieving the loss of someone they love.

Hoffmann Hospice hosted its 25th annual "Light Up A Life" Tuesday night at The Marketplace in southwest Bakersefield - to honor the memory of loved ones lost.

"My mom passed in August and so this is our first holiday experience without her," Stacie Davis said.

Davis isn't alone. Hundreds of people at Hoffmann's Light Up A Life event are struggling, many for the first time, to celebrate a holiday season without someone they love.

Travis and Barbara Bugli are also celebrating this Christmas without their mother.

"This is the first holiday without her so this is something that is very special," Barbara Bugli said of Hoffmann's Light Up A Life event.

"Our mother's passing was kind of sudden and this is the first time that we've celebrated a Christmas without her. We're blessed that at least we have good memories of her... We're just here to light a candle in her memory," brother Travis Bugli added.

Nearly 1000 names were read Tuesday night and each light on the tree of life represents the memories of a lifetime.

Stacie said, finding a way to be closer to her mom through the experiences Hoffmann offers is amazing for her and her family.

The money raised Tuesday night will go toward the care of Hoffmann Hospice patients without insurance and no means to cover hospice costs.

Hoffmann's goal was to raise $25,000 for patient care and veterans programs in 2018.
