Bakersfield, Calif. - The seemingly safe community of Golden Valley Luxury Apartments was shaken Wednesday morning when one of its residents - Marcos Vargas - was murdered.
Late Wednesday afternoon, friends and colleagues told 17 News, the victim is 26-year-old Marcos Vargas.
Vargas was an attorney with Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance - he was also involved with the Young Lawyers Section of the Kern County Bar Association and the Immigration Justice Collaborative.
A young man - just 26 years old - who friends and colleagues say was "one of the nicest guys in the world."
Bakersfield Police were called just after 3 Wednesday morning to Golden Valley Luxury Apartments in the 600 block of Hosking Avenue.
Officers found Vargas on the ground outside his apartment with fatal injuries. His killer remains unknown.
Almost 24 hours later, a crime scene unit still remained on scene at the Golden Valley Apartment Complex.
Friends of Vargas spoke to 17 News about his hardworking nature; calling him an advocate for his clients who went above and beyond for the city of Bakersfield. Saying, he didn't deserve this.
We reached out to detectives and the BPD but have not received an update about a suspect in this killing. If you have any information, call Bakersfield Police at 327-7111.
