Man at large after abducting and assaulting a 72-year-old woman

Woman struck by man's car prior to attempted sexual assault

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF - Sheriff's detectives are on the hunt for a man who assaulted an elderly woman- and may be connected to another violent attack. In both cases, women were assaulted by a stranger in isolated orchards in the Delano-McFarland area.

This morning, the 72-year-old victim was struck by her attacker's car, and then tricked into thinking he was going to bring her to safety. But once she got inside his vehicle, that quickly changed.

It was around 7 a.m., the sun was already blazing, when a 72-year-old woman went for a walk. She passed Browning Road Elementary School, headed west down a dirt road. That's when a car came from behind and struck her.

The man driving the car got out and told her he'd drive her to the hospital. The woman asked him to bring her home, but he told her he was driving her to the hospital instead. That's when he took her to a desolate road about half a mile north of Peterson Road, east of Driver Road, and forced her out of the car.

He tried to undress her, when a farm laborer appeared and interrupted the assault. The attacker ran away and drove off. The 72-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The attacker is described as being a Hispanic man in 20's or 30's, medium build, about 200 pounds, with short dark hair and a short beard. His vehicle is described as a dark colored four door Toyota Camry.

The sheriff's department is investigating the possibility that this assault is related to a similar one that happened on May 5. In that case, a woman was attacked from behind in a McFarland vineyard. The attacker knocked her to the ground and stabbed her. The attacker fled before deputies arrived. That victim did not get a good look at the man's face.

If you have any information on either of these assaults, you're asked to call the sheriff's department at 861-3110, or secret witness at 322-4040.
