Strip mall stores damaged in overnight fire in south Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A strip mall in south Bakersfield left several businesses damaged early Friday.

When firefighters arrived on scene just before three a.m., heavy smoke was pouring from one of the stores located at South H Street and Brundage Lane.

Approximately 40 city and county firefighters responded to the scene.

"One problem with these strip malls is the common attic," Battalion Chief John Frando with the Bakersfield Fire Department said.

"So one of the difficulties we have is getting ahead of the fire. We tried to control this fire spread from north to south by cutting a trench cut, Frando said."

Firefighters minimized damage to the stores to the south end of the mall, however, several stores still suffered major damage.

No one was inside the mall when the fire broke out.  No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
