Two Bakersfield women swept downstream in Tule River identified

COFFEE CAMP, Tulare County - Two Cal State Bakersfield students who were reportedly swept downstream in the Tule River in Tulare County last week were identified by the Tulare County Sheriff's Office.

A caller reported that just after 10 a.m. on April 13, one woman, Shreya Singh, 21, of Bakersfield, slipped into the water near Coffee Camp.

A second woman, Alondra Orozco, 21, also from Bakersfield, went into the river voluntarily in an attempt to save her.

Orozco has not been recovered.

Their three friends remained on the shore and called 911.

The Tulare Sheriff's Office said the day of the incident, attempts were made to identify the victims.

As a result, their identities were mixed up, officials said.

Orozco was initially identified as the woman who fell into the river.  However, verification was made through fingerprints and officials determined it was actually Singh who was confirmed dead, and Orozco was still missing.

The families were immediately notified.

Kern County Fire Air Unit assisted in the search for the women.

Search and rescue efforts were scaled back on April 15 based on safety concerns and the condition of the river, Tulare Sheriff's officials said.

However, the TKSO maintains a continual presence along the Tule River, saying they would like to bring closure to the Orozco family.
