Unbearable temperatures hit Kern, wildlife responds accordingly

BEAR VALLEY, Calif. - Even the animal kingdom is finding this heat unbearable.

This series of photos was taken yesterday by KGET viewer E.J. Cox, who lives in -- appropriately -- Bear Valley, where temperatures hit a high of 83 degrees. The young bear was seen taking a dip in Cox's animal trough, in a bid to beat the heat.

The San Joaquin Valley is in the midst of a harsh heat wave, with the National Weather Service issuing an excessive heat warning through Thursday.

The summer heat can bring plenty of wildlife out of the woods in search of water, food and shade, but officials tell the public it's always best to enjoy wildlife from a distance.
