Young girl on life support, pedestrian accident under investigation

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A young girl's life is hanging in the balance as police continue the investigation into the pedestrian accident that left her hospitalized on life support. Family members said Fatima Lopez, 11, is fighting for her life at children's hospital in Madera. Meanwhile, police said they still are attempting to determine if the driver was under the influence.

Family members filled a hospital waiting room over the weekend, awaiting word of Fatima's condition. Her brother posted pictures and video on social media asking for prayers.

Fatima was hit by a car Friday night while crossing Stockdale Highway near California Avenue. Witnesses told BPD Fatima and another girl crossed the intersection against a red hand signal. Police said Monday they haven't determined who had the right of way.

BPD Sgt. Don Cegielski said the driver stopped at the scene. He was given multiple breathalyzer tests, but hasn't been arrested. Police said they haven't determined if the driver was under the influence.

As the investigation continues -- Fatima's family is holding onto hope for the girl who they describe as smart, funny and faithful.
