BAKERSFIELD, CA - A Bakersfield attorney charged with attempted murder could soon face a murder charge. Mark Madrigali is accused of shooting his wife last month, and her death Wednesday has been ruled a homicide. The coroner has determined Trivia Madrigali died of complications from a gunshot wound.
Almost a month ago, Mark Madrigali called police from his home on Telegraph Avenue in northeast Bakersfield and said his wife had been shot. He told police the shooting was an accident. His wife was taken to Kern Medical Center.
The hospital had been tight-lipped about her condition. The coroner said Trivia Madrigali died at her friend's home on Ryan Drive in east Bakersfield.
A spokesperson for Kern Medical Center said the hospital had no information about when Trivia Madrigali was released. The woman who lives on Ryan Drive wouldn't talk to 17 News.
According to court documents, Trivia Madrigali lived with the woman on Ryan Drive last fall while she was fighting with her husband. The woman told police she had seen Madrigali with black eyes and scratches.
According to the woman, Madrigali said her husband had put a gun to her head and in her mouth. Madrigali said these kind of incidents had been going on since 2010.
"He'd promise her that he would stop doing, ya know, his drinking or whatever and she gave him a chance," said Socorro Torres.
Torres lived next door to the couple. "She had a good heart. Nothing bad to say about anybody," she continued. "Never once said anything bad. I think that's why she wanted to make her marriage work," she said.
Torres said she and her husband heard the couple argue. "We knew there was violence there. I wouldn't see her around. We knew," said Torres.
Mark Madrigali pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, assault with a firearm, and spousal abuse. The District Attorney's office won't make any decisions about the case until the full autopsy report is complete.
Mark Madrigali denied our request for a jailhouse interview. He is being held on more than $1.5 million bail. He is scheduled to be back in court next Thursday.
