UPDATE: BPD: Driver at fault in fatal crash involving bicycle

Bakersfield Police say the man was riding his bike in the bike lane when the driver struck him. He was taken to KMC where he later died.
BAKERSFIELD, CA -- Bakersfield Police say the driver was at fault in a collision that killed a Bakersfield man riding his bike in northwest Bakersfield Tuesday night.

Bakersfield Police say the accident happened just before 10 p.m. in the 4800 block of Coffee Road.

Police say Tony Ray Rumple was riding his bike in the bike lane when the driver struck him. Rumple was taken to Kern Medical Center where he later died.  The driver has been identified as Ashley Bell, 26.  Bakersfield Police say it appears Bell was talking on the phone using a legal hands-free device. 

Police say drugs and alcohol don't appear to be a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.
