BAKERSFIELD - A local couple is getting ready to celebrate a major marriage milestone. 17 News first introduced you to Olive and Verlan Stevens last year on their 77th wedding anniversary. Now, they are about ready to hit 78 years together.
Olive and Verlan are both 97 years old. Their journey together as man and wife began all the way back on August 24, 1935.
"We got married and she's been my little chickie, my little chickie ever since and I wanted nobody else," said Verlan.
At the couple's home in Weldon is where we first met the ever-lasting love birds last year for their anniversary. Now, they live at Hallmark, an assisted-living facility in Bakersfield. But, these two need no help in the romance department.
"Oh the romance," said Olive. "It's not too hard is it?," asked Verlan. "No," laughed Olive. "No, at our age and our health and everything, we are just young kids really," said Verlan.
They were young kids when they met, just sixteen.
"He only took me out on 25 cents, that was it," said Olive. "That is what it cost me to take her out and this is the results of it," laughed Verlan.
After three years of wooing, the two were married, starting their 78 year journey together.
"This girl here? She's more beautiful then she ever was. You know why? We grew old together," said Verlan.
Every year offered something new: children, grandchildren, anniversaries. They only constant, they were side by side. They share kisses that never get old with age and a love with no expiration date. They celebrate 78 years together and count on cuddling through many more.
"You wouldn't want to change me for another woman?," asked Olive to Verlan.
"I say, I don't think. I can't think of anything I'd want to change. So you just keep being as sweet as you are and we'll get along. Right?," asked Verlan.
"Yep," answered Olive. "And, you keep being as sweet as you are," said Olive.
"I'll do it," said Verlan. "It's still great. She's still my babe." said Verlan.
Olive and Vernan's children plan on having a party for them on their anniversary on Saturday.
