A talented local actor who performed in many local productions has died.
34-year-old Maceo Davis was remembered Wednesday evening at a candlelight vigil outside Stars Theatre in downtown Bakersfield.
Davis was well loved in the local theater arts community, starring in many of the city's biggest productions, including the recent production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Davis died Wednesday morning, but the cause of death is unknown.
On stage, Maceo Davis received rave reviews for his performances. Off stage, friends say he was a bright light that you couldn't get enough of.
"His presence will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on for ever," said one friend.
"He lived his life for everyone, not for most, not for some, but for everyone," said another.
Davis had roles in Huck Finn, Driving Miss Daisy, and Gem of the Ocean.
He loved to perform and reach out to the audience, even playing the last shows of Driving Miss Daisy four days after an emergency appendectomy.
"He had an amazing spirit, and he was an incredible dancer. He had this huge booming voice that you could not mistake. He was just this big, bright light," remembered friend Sheila McClure.
The crowd was somber and sad, but they took turns telling stories about their dear friend, bringing smiles to those he touched.
"Maceo just loved being on stage because he knew what he was doing, gave something to other people. What he was doing on stage, touched other people," continued McClure.
Stars Theatre is taking collections to help the family pay with funeral expenses. Donations can be dropped off at the theater on Chester Ave.
