Bakersfield, Ca. --Arson investigators say they're looking into a fire that destroyed an abandoned house in southeast Bakersfield Monday morning.
According to the Kern County Fire Department the call came in around 10:30 a.m. of a home on fire in the 300 block of South Haley Street.
The Kern County and Bakersfield Fire Departments both responded with four engines, two trucks and 24 personnel.
When crews arrived, firefighters said the single family home was completely engulfed but crews were able to put out the fire within 25 minutes.
Residents say the home has been boarded up for months and they have their suspicions why the home caught fire.
"From what I knew of it seemed like an empty abandoned house but you never know, there could be squatters," said Adrian Alanis, who lives just down the street from the home on fire.
"It had to have been lit on fire, because as soon as I seen you guys coming I walked out seen the smoke and at the end of the alley going south was a couple with a shopping cart," said Celina Robles who also lives in the area. "Who's to say if they were living in there, cooking, I don't know."
Arson investigators were called out to the scene and are looking into what caused the fire.
Fire crews say there were no reported injuries. The Kern County Fire Department estimates damage at $50,000.
