City councilman plans to run for county assessor

A Kern County Elections official says Russell Johnson is among 3 candidates who have declared their intention to run for Kern County Assessor.
BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A Kern County Elections official says Bakersfield City Councilman Russell Johnson is among three people who have declared their candidacy for Kern County Assessor-Recorder.  An official says Johnson declared his candidacy Wednesday.

Johnson's term as Ward 7 councilman expires in November 2014.  The other declared candidates are Lupe Esquivias and Jon Lifquist who is a manager in the Assessor-Recorder's office.  Johnson still needs to collect 20 valid signatures to make his candidacy official.

The nomination period for the assessor-recorder post was extended until Wednesday because the current assessor Jim Fitch chose not to run.  The position pays a yearly salary of $147,449.
