SHAFTER, CA -- A Shafter man has been arrested, accused of being in possession of a stolen PG&E gas detector.  The sheriff's rural crime unit had recently been checking on stolen equipment in Shafter, near Beech Avenue and Burbank Street.

They found Vernon Phillips, 42, in the 18000 block of Beech Avenue with a stolen PG&E gas detector worth around $4,000.  The detector, according to deputies, is designed to test ambient air and flue gas over a wide temperature range.
