(ESPN) -- USA lost 1-0 to Germany in Recife but the result was enough for both countries to progress to the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup.

Thomas Muller's second-half goal was the difference between the two sides, as Germany finished top of Group G on seven points and the U.S. clinched second on goal difference at the expense of Portugal.

Germany enjoyed the better of the chances during the early exchanges of the game, with Lukas Podolski going close in the second minute, but the U.S. were threatening on the counter, as Graham Zusi curled a shot just off target on 22 minutes.

USA fell behind on 55 minutes when goalkeeper Tim Howard palmed away Per Mertesacker's header only for Thomas Muller to arrow in a shot from just outside of the area into the corner.
