Local respiratory rally for those suffering with lung diseases

The rally will feature medical professionals like doctors and respiratory therapists, motivational speakers, and sessions on a variety of topics to help those suffering from lung disease.
BAKERSFIELD, CA- The American Lung Association reports every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. is told she has lung cancer.  This week, the association launched its inaugural "National Women's Lung Health Week" to raise awareness and increase support for early detection of lung disease.

According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women.  It surpassed breast cancer in deadliness in 1987.

The lung cancer rate in women has doubled in the past 35 years. And to halt those numbers, the American Lung Association in Bakersfield is hosting a respitory rally.

It's a free educational conference for those suffering from chronic lung diseases such as emphysema, lung cancer and asthma.

Asthma is prominent in Kern County.  According to Californiabreathing.org, 111,000 people in our county have been diagnosed with the disease.

"Because of our air quality. Because of the among of people who smoke in our community. Because of the other things in our environment it makes us sort of a, for a lack of a better term, a bowl. And so a lot of our lung health and respiratory issues comes because of that and so there's an increase in our community of people who could really use this information," said Tamira Smith Lopez with the American Lung Association.

The rally will feature medical professionals like doctors and respiratory therapists, motivational speakers, and sessions on a variety of topics to help those suffering from lung disease.

The respiratory rally will take place Thursday, May 15 at Memorial Hospital Founders Hall at 420 34th Street.  The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Breakfast and lunch will be served. The event is open to anyone suffering from chronic lung diseases and their caregivers.
