Police investigating officer-involved shooting in southwest Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA -- The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting in southwest Bakersfield. The shooting took place at Belle Terrace and McDonald Way, putting West High School on lockdown.

Police say just after 3 p.m. Friday, CHP officers tried to pull over a car near Belle Terrace and Castro Lane. Officers say a pursuit soon began, but quickly ended when the driver crashed into a parked car.

Police say the man then got out of the vehicle and ran away from the scene. Officers say the man was later spotted by a witness going into a residence.

When CHP officers approached the house, the man fired several shots at officers. He also fired at BPD officers who showed up to the residence soon after the CHP.

Police say no injuries were reported during the shooting. Officers say the man is barricaded inside a garage and has made some communication with officers.

The SWAT team is also on scene deploying gas bombs near the garage. Police are asking residents in the area to stay indoors.
