TEHACHAPI, CA- Tehachapi is getting a new dog park after winning $25,000 in the "Bark For Your Park" contest.

Pet Safe, a pet product retailer, offers thousands of dollars to cities nationwide, based on a show of community support.

Getting about a thousand votes every day, for two months, the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District took one of the top spots.

Meadowbrook park is getting the makeover.

"Even though we do have open space, we don't have space that's appropriate for dog play and features for that," said Matt Young the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District Manager.

The TVRPD brought in the most votes for a small city and finished third overall.

"We're a small community, demographically, but we have a very large demographic of pet owners here," said Young.

And when there's a call for support in the canine community. You can bet the mutt militia is involved.

"We partnered with Marley's Mutts to capture the votes because if you're going to vote for a dog park, who better to go to than your animal rescue," said Young.

"Our fans made the biggest difference. We would not have gotten this if it weren't for our Mutt Militia. They really came through and I'm extremely proud of our group," said Marley's Mutts founder Zach Skow.

With more than 70,000 votes and $25,000 dollars, local pups will soon have a new playground.

"I hope we'll be able to add some durable agility equipment and stuff like that, make it very conducive for training," said Skow.

The new park is expected to be completed by spring.
