Two California Highway Patrol officers were killed Monday morning in a multiple-vehicle crash on Highway 99 in Kingsburg, officials confirmed to NBC affiliate KCRA.

The officers' vehicle overturned in the crash on southbound lanes in Fresno County just before 6 a.m., KCRA reported.

Southbound lanes of Highway 99 were still closed as of 8 a.m. at Bethel Avenue. They were expected to remain closed most of the day.

The chain reaction began when an unlit pickup truck was struck by multiple vehicles, the CHP said. It was facing the wrong direction, officials reported.

The officer then crashed and overturned.

No other injuries were reported.

The male officers' names were not immediately released.  Kingsburg is between Fresno and Visalia, about 107 miles north of Bakersfield.
