Man claims he witnessed mail theft in Northwest Bakersfield

Mail theft continues in Northwest Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.

A man claims he witnessed a man stealing mail out of his community's mailbox in Northwest Bakersfield Friday. Matt Laird was driving passed his mailbox when he saw a thief taking mail from his mailbox at 8:45 a.m.

"I came around the corner and saw a blue Chevy Blazer parked in front. He had a key in the door and the door wide open and he was just shoveling the mail out of the boxes out of the right hand side," said Laird.

Laird followed the car to report the description and license plates to police. According to Laird, the thief became agitated, drove at high speeds and ran red lights before the chase ended.

Sharon Vaughn, in Northwest, has had her mail stolen numerous times over the past year. She has had bills, DMV registration and other personal information stolen from her mailbox.

"You know, this is supposed to be our private mail. This is just for me and my husband, but someone is coming in and taking things out of it," said Vaughn.

If you are a victim of mail theft, you should call the United States Postal Inspector service at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777).
