(KING) A Monroe, Washington hospital welcomed a group of 6th graders Tuesday afternoon for a field trip prompted by one student's letter.

"Dear Dr. Hochman. My name is Niko Johnson," the 12 year old read. "I've gone through a lot of stuff in the 12 years I've been alive."

Johnson's father left his family seven years ago after his parents divorced. His mom battles alcoholism. But his letter focuses on his grandfather, Bob Strom, who nearly died of a heart attack.

Providence Health & Services doctors saved Strom's life with triple bypass surgery.

"What if I lose my grandpa? I mean, he's been one of my idols since my dad left," Johnson said.

As a thank you, Johnson wrote Providence CEO Dr. Rod Hochman.

"It didn't seem like it came from someone who's 12-years-old and in 6th grade. It was very articulate," said Providence Northwest Region CEO Preston Simmons.
