(NBC News) The US House of Representatives passed a bill late this afternoon in Washington D.C. that will help keep money flowing for highways, bridges and other infrastructure.

The short term fix will only fund the trust though May 2015. Because that's all that Speaker of the House, John Boehner says he can get.

"giving speeches about long-term highway bill is just rhetoric." says Boehner

A long term fix is what President Obama wants. Although, after touring a highway research facility in Virginia, he too said he'll take what he can get.

"Congress shouldn't pat itself on the back for diverting disaster for a few months, kicking the can down the road for a few months, careening from crisis to crisis when it comes to something as basic as our infrastructure," said President Obama

A similar bill shoring up the trust fund is pending in the Senate. But even conservative groups are critical of the plan, saying the 11-billion dollars comes from a few budget gimmicks that solve nothing long term.
