Officials identify Delano family, pastor involved in suspected DUI crash on Snow Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol and Kern County coroner released additional information in the Christmas Day crash that killed a driver on Snow Road east of Jenica Street around 4:45 p.m.

Meantime, family members have identified the man killed as Pastor Moises from Way of Salvation Church in Delano.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined 65-year-old Moises Lucas Garo was attempting to make an unsafe U-turn in a 2000 Pontiac minivan before he and four other occupants were struck by a truck.

According to CHP, Garo slowed to the shoulder of Snow Road when a 2002 Ford truck, driven by 46-year-old Brent Spears, of Bakersfield, was approaching from behind the minivan.

Spears attempted to avoid a collision by swerving to the left, however the front of the Ford collided with the left side of the Pontiac, according to CHP.

After the collision, both vehicles came to rest blocking the roadway.

Garo was transported to Kern Medical where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, according to Kern County coroner.

CHP says four other occupants in Garo's van were transported to the hospital with minor injuries:

  • 72-year-old Lydia Garo, of Delano
  • 19-year-old Kenneth Garo, of Delano
  • 10-year-old girl, of Delano
  • 14-year-old girl, of Delano

Spears was arrested for a misdemeanor charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
