Officials shut down one lane following sinkhole near Westside Parkway

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
One lane near Westside Parkway is closed due to a sinkhole, according to Bakersfield Police Department.

The right lane is closed under the train bridge, just before the Westside Parkway on Truxtun Ave.

The sinkhole was first reported at 4 p.m. Sunday.

BPD said several vehicles hit the sinkhole, but there there was only minor vehicle damage.

Public Works said they are investigating to see if water from the Kern River is responsible for the void under the freeway. They are surveying the Kern River to try and find the exact source of the water, which is running into a storm drain.

Repairs cannot begin until the water pressure in the sink hole is reduced.

No injuries were reported and public works will avoid making the repairs during peak drive hours.
