5 year old girl dies after being struck by vehicle in Southwest Bakersfield

Girl's grandmother also hit

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UPDATE: Bakersfield police confirm the woman walking with 5-year-old Emily Guillen-Casillas was her grandmother. 

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision, but remains under investigation.


Kern County coroner identified the young girl who was struck and killed by a vehicle as Emily Guillen-Casillas. Panama Buena Vista School District says she was a student at Loudon Elementary. Grief counselors are available for students at the school.

A 5 year old girl died of her injuries after being hit by a vehicle in Southwest Bakersfield Wednesday. A woman who the girl was walking with remains in a hospital with severe injuries.

The crash was reported at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of California Spring Drive and Harris Road, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Bakersfield police said a driver traveling northbound on California Springs Drive was making an eastward turn but swerved to avoid oncoming vehicles and hit the woman and the girl who were walking on a sidewalk.

Police said the two needed to be pulled from under the vehicle. The girl was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The woman is hospitalized and listed in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and said it isn't known yet if alcohol or drugs are involved.
