Kan. and Bakersfield authorities cooperate in baby deaths investigations

Kansas authorities investigate into whether or not a 2015 baby death is related

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Authorities are investigating whether the death of a couple's 6-month-old baby in 2015 is connected to the death of their second child -- an 18-day old -- in Bakersfield last year.

The Shawnee (Kansas) County District Attorney announced investigators are looking into the November 2015 death of Gage and Deborah Roberts' 6-month-old baby in Topeka, Kansas.

That investigation may lead to new charges for the couple in Kansas.

Gage and Deborah Roberts were arrested in Bakersfield on July 21 on charges related to the April 2016 death of their 18-day old baby, Crimson, in the Downtowner Inn on Chester Avenue.

The couple faces second-degree murder and cruelty to a child charges in Kern County.

In an interview with 17 News' Olivia LaVoice, Gage Roberts said a coroner in Kansas concluded the couple's first child died of sudden infant death syndrome.

In the same interview, Gage Roberts said he and his wife never hurt either baby, and the death of their second child in 2016 is another tragedy.

17 News asked Roberts how he thought their second child died.

"I don't know ... If anything one of us accidentally rolled over on him, but we're both sensitive sleepers enough to where we would've woke up," he said.

Deborah Roberts gave birth to a third child on July 20. Bakersfield police arrested the couple the next day, and the third child was taken into protective custody.
