Police investigating possible child abuse in infant death

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Ridgecrest Police are investigating an infant death. Search warrants indicate there might've been foul play.

The parents told police they put the baby facedown in a closet to take a nap. According to a search warrant, when they checked on him a few hours later, he was purple and wasn't breathing.

The detective who wrote the search warrant said there is evidence of possible child abuse and neglect. Investigators said the baby appeared to be dehydrated and underweight. The father also reportedly told police the baby's death was his fault because he put the child down for a nap.

Charges haven't been filed in this case.

Children should sleep alone, on their backs in cribs. According to the child death review team, unsafe sleeping is the number one killer of local babies.
