Sheriff's helicopter helps police arrest grand theft auto suspect

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A driver is behind bars this morning after leading local law enforcement on a chase in a stolen car in Northeast Bakersfield.

Police first spotted the stolen car around 9:12 p.m. Wednesday night in the 1300 block of Baker Street. Officers tried to pull the driver over, but instead a chase started through East Bakersfield. A Kern County Sheriff's helicopter responded to the chase.

During the chase, the driver got out of the stolen car and was picked up by someone else in a different car, police reported.

That car was eventually pulled over and 30-year-old Porfirio Fonseca Jr. was arrested. Foncesca was charged with grand theft auto, possession of stolen vehicle, evading arrest and hit-and-run reckless driving.

Somewhere during the chase, Fonseca crashed into a parked car. No other crashes were reported, according to police.
