Caltrans workers honored their colleagues who had been killed on the job.

They underscored their losses with a colorful reminder.

John Lieu said, "Too many highway workers are being killed. We need drivers to drive in one lane of traffic near construction zones and to slow down."

The California Department of Transportation paid tribute to employees who have lost their lives in the line of duty, dating back to 1924.

The ceremony featured 169 orange cones draped with black bands, each cone symbolizing the life of a Caltrans highway worker killed on the job.

The California Highway Patrol wants to remind people to stay in one lane through construction zones and follow the posted speed limits to prevent future deaths and injuries to Caltrans workers.
