Tehachapi correctional officer brutally attacked by inmate

TEHACHAPI, Calif. - A correctional officer and inmate are in the hospital this morning after officials at the California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi said the inmate brutally attacked the officer.

Around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, prison officials said the inmate, 41-year-old Agustin Garcia, threw hot water on the officer's face then stabbed him repeatedly with a makeshift weapon.

Other staff members responded using less-lethal 40 millimeter rounds and batons to stop the attack. Two other inmates also helped to stop the attack.

The officer suffered puncture wounds to the shoulder, neck and head, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was transported to a local hospital.

Garcia suffered a fractured skull and broken eye orbital and was also taken to the hospital, CDCR said.

Garcia has been housed at Tehachapi since June 2001 and was serving a sentence of 52 years to life for two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer in Kings County.
