BAKERSFIELD,CA - Highway 178 is open again after a head-on crash, that sent eight people to the hospital, closed the roadway in the Kern River Canyon.

The crash happened around 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon -- about four miles into the canyon. The California Highway Patrol says the driver of a Honda Accord made an unsafe turn and briefly left the roadway -- then hit a Dodge pickup truck head on after coming back onto the pavement.

Officers say it appears everyone was wearing their seatbelt -- including a child in a child seat in the pickup.

Two helicopters airlifted patients to the hospital. No word on the extent of their injuries.
