OILDALE, CA - The Kern County Sheriff's Department has released new information in last week's deadly deputy-involved shooting in Oildale.
Deputies say they wanted to release details of the incident sooner, but couldn't reach the deceased man's next of kin.
According to Sheriff Donny Youngblood, deputies shot 41-year-old Christopher McDaniel near the intersection of Plymouth Avenue and Beardsley Avenue.
During the altercation, deputies say a sheriff's dog was also shot, but Sheriff Youngblood said it remains unclear who shot the animal.
Investigators say McDaniel was on a motorcycle, driving at a high rate of speed, when deputies tried to pull him over last Wednesday night.
But, they say McDaniel didn't stop and kept driving erratically and at dangerous speeds.
After a short chase, he crashed then tried to run away.
That's when Deputy Aaron Warmerdam, an eight-year veteran with the department, pulled his baton to try to arrest McDaniel.
At the same time, Deputy Jeffery Kelley, a six-year veteran, deployed his canine partner, Luke.
Investigators say that's when McDaniel pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at Deputy Warmerdam.
Both deputies fired three shots.
McDaniel was hit, although it's unclear how many times. He was taken to the hospital where he died.
"It took a while in this case and you know, we were asked why so long and we've been trying to notify next of kin of the suspect, and we were not able to do that until this morning," said Sheriff Donny Youngblood.
Investigators say McDaniel did fire one round from his gun, but it's not known if it hit anything.
The dog had surgery Friday and is expected to survive.
Investigators later found the motorcycle was stolen. McDaniel is a felon with a history of weapons and theft convictions.
Both Deputies Warmerdam and Kelley are on routine administrative leave pending a review from the lethal force review board.
Sheriff Youngblood also said Wednesday there is video of the incident from a nearby store security camera.
Youngblood said the department is working to get it.
