Dean Florez fined $60K for misusing campaign funds

The former State Senate leader has agreed to pay the record fine to the state's political watchdog agency.
BAKERSFIELD, CA- Former State Senate leader Dean Florez has agreed to pay a record $60,000 fine to the state's political watchdog agency for misusing campaign funds.

Democrat Dean Florez represented the City of Shafter and served as Senate Majority leader.  But his troubles stem from his abandoned 2010 run for Lieutenant Governor and a 2014 race for State Controller.

Investigators found Florez spent $26,000 in campaign funds on personal purchases and failed to refund $247,000 in contributions.

The Fair Political Practices Commission says it's the largest fine for personal use of campaign funds.
