The season's best gift: Blood

BAKERSFIELD, CA -- The need for blood never takes a vacation, and Houchin Community Blood Bank is in particular need of A-, B-, O-, O+, and A+ blood, as well as platelets, heading into the holiday season. To remind the public of the ongoing need for these life-saving products for Kern County patients, the blood bank is hosting 15 Days of Giving, a blood drive designed to encourage blood and platelet donation through December, beginning Monday, December 16, 2013.

Between December 16 and 31, 2013, donors can enter to win one of two $500 Target shopping sprees, thanks to a grant from Target. This partnership comes at a crucial time when it is necessary to engage new donors with blood donation, and encourage those who come in occasionally to make the time to donate. Travel, holiday hustle and bustle, and colds and flu, all play a part in the limited availability of regular donors this time of year.

To offset the many reasons not to give, extra incentives help focus attention on the current need. In addition to the Target shopping spree opportunity drawings, donors will receive the limited edition "Right Type to Donate Blood" t-shirt. The trendy burgundy shirt identifies the wearer as the "right type" to donate what patients need this winter. The message continues our effort to explain to donors how special their blood type is so we have what patients need on hand to improve and save lives every day.

The Truxtun Donor Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 6 pm, Thursday from 11 am to 8 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm. The Bolthouse Donor Center is open Monday and Wednesday 11 am to 7 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 7 am to 3 pm. It is closed Friday and Saturday. Both centers are closed on Sunday. More information and appointments are also available at www.hcbb.com, or from Peggy Smith at 661-616-2505. Walk-ins are also welcome.
